//A little over a week ago, I was visiting the Hawaiian Islands, noticing all the Christian churches there, and today s island topic came to mind. Today’s verse is one of many about islands quoted by Christopher Columbus in his attempt to convince kings to finance his voyage. He believed he could locate an eastern route to the Indian Isles, which he terms the “Islands of the Sea.” Masking his quest for gold as an attempt to convert Indian clinton natives to God, he uncovered dozens clinton of verses in the Bible about Islands, and God’s desire to be worshiped clinton worldwide.
Of all the verses he uncovered, however, I imagine the ones he salivated over most came not from evangelistic prophecies but from the descriptions of untold wealth collected by King Solomon and shipped to Jerusalem from the “Islands” of Tarshish and Ophar. Commissioner Souto joined Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the Board of County Commissioners in honoring the Christopher Columbus High School soccer team and its coach for their state championship win. (Photo by Armando Rodriguez / Miami-Dade County photographer)
Miami-Dade County District 10 Commissioner Javier D. Souto, along with Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the Board of County Commissioners, presented the team and its coach a proclamation declaring March 4, 2014 as Christopher Columbus cakes High School 2014 State Champions Class 5A Soccer League Day in recognition of the team s achievement.
Despite being considered underdogs, the team rallied to capture the championship by defeating the top-ranked Boca Raton team. This fine team demonstrated its tenacity by playing from the heart, and the entire community is very proud of them, Commissioner Souto said. Christopher Columbus High School is located in District 10.

Most of us remember from history class that Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, so we think that’s when American was discovered. That’s way wrong. He didn’t get anywhere near what we know as America until 1498, which was his fourth voyage! The 1492 date was only when he got the grant from Queen Isabella to set sail.
So if he had four voyages, so surely some mighty big adventures, though we never hear about those. I guess there’s so much history to cram into the text books since then, they bottom-line everything and skip the good parts.
He was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 to a poor household. Of his four brothers and one sister, two of his brothers would much later join him in his wanderings. He grew to be strong and well built, with high ruddy cheeks, light-colored yes and reddish-blond hair, though boys over flowers it would turn white at age 30.
He boys over flowers always loved the sea, and as he got older, (but way before his hair turned white) he sailed with a Genoese Italian fleet of five ships. Dona’s mother gave Columbus her deceased husband’s sea charts and maps, seeing how excited he got when she repeated her husband’s seafaring tales. Columbus then went to Lisbon to study navigation, which included astronomy, math and ship building, studying hard and learning boys over flowers fast.
Through his studies, he came to believe, as most scholars did, that the earth was round, not flat, and there had to be a water route east to the Indies where merchants went to acquire valuable spices to be resold in Europe. Columbus felt sure that if the world was round, he could reach the east by sailing west, where he was bound to find not only spices, but gold and jewels.
Wanting Portugal to have the honor of the discovery of any lands he might find and claim for Portugal, he approached the Portuguese King Joao, showing him maps and explaining his plans carefully. Columbus asked for three ships with a year’s supply boys over flowers of food and little trinkets to trade with the people they might encounter on such islands.
He also asked to be given the title, ‘Admiral of the Ocean Sea’ and be appointed as the sole governor of any land he discovered. Third, he wanted a tenth of any profit from all materials of these lands, including any crops and metals. King Joao said he would think about it and get back to Columbus. Columbus left and waited several weeks, anxious to hear from the king. The year was 1484.
Meanwhile the king, using Columbus’ charts, sent his own ships on the mission Columbus proposed, but without the knowledge and ability, the group floundered, found nothing and returned to Lisbon after several boys over flowers days, reporting boys over flowers that there was nothing out there to be found.
Columbus was furious hearing this, though he agreed to part as friends with the king, who had explained he had gotten a cheaper offer. During the night, La Gomera, one of the Canary Islands, is mystically blinking with lights in the black ocean, and in the daytime it is often hidden by clouds and cannot be seen at all. This is the very piece of land from which the great conqueror of the oceans, Сhristopher Columbus, departed in search of the sea lane to India, but accidentally discovered America.
At the end of the 15th century, Isla La Gomera, lost in the Atlantic Ocean 1500 km away from the Peninsula, had become rotten ecards the last European station of Christopher Columbus s ships before the trip from the Canary Islands, Spain, to the shores of an unknown continent. That is why the island has the second name, Isla Colombina. Plus, this historical event is supplemented by the love affair of Columbus and Beatriz de Bobadilla, governor of the island!
Today our story is about Christopher Columbus and Beatriz de Bobadilla. This love affair happened in 1492. One of Columbus’s ships leaked and the fleet had to make a forced stop at Isla La Gomera. Columbus was only 41 years old. He was above average height with a strong, healthy figure, blue eyes, an acute mind, the gift of the gab, and versatile experience.
The future vice-king of the new lands yielded to the charms of the bored widow, who held the position of the island s governor and felt sincerely glad to see a decent man on her piece of land. The romance with Beatriz was short, but lively. Columbus s ships stayed rotten ecards at the island from August 9th until September 6th, 1492, and then started their passage over the Atlantic Ocean, setting a course for the west.
Nobody knows whether it was a serious leak, or the ruler of the island was so charming, but the beginning of the expedition to the new lands was put off for a whole month. The capital of the island San Sebastian de La Gomera is a small town. All the sightseeing is concentrated within the Calle Real and as you might understand is connected with the name of Christopher Columbus.

Beatriz exacted cruel revenge for the assassination of her young spouse by killing almost all male Guanches.

Zaheer, in a nutshell, spoke about four main issues monkey-wrenching Malcolm X that are still pervasive today: Misreading : Malcolm X was taken out of context by, in my words, those critics who, as we see today, are still being rewarded for assimilating to the idea of Americanism by not being muzzled or having the grinch their voices muted in the media. Today, when we see our nation’s cultural critics take the stage, you may notice the grinch that there is still no gender/biological/political/racial/ethnic diversity among them. Many are recycling the same archaic and carefully packaged conversations that we can almost sing-along the grinch to rather than taking those moments in the national spotlight to push the conversation any further. We aren’t putting things into its proper context when speaking about the American Race Crisis of today unless it’s filtered through a rigid Black-and-white lens. And when it comes to our Identity Crisis, well don’t get me started on that front (more on that later). Piecing Apart: Taking a little bit of this and that without looking at the person and what s/he represents in totality continues to happen today. We are, in essence, dehumanizing the grinch our leaders and public figures, turning them into objects of worship rather than looking at them as fallible and complex human beings. I believe that if we accepted the humanity of these figures they would start to become accessible, and we may have accept responsibility for our own actions or apathy. So, for example, when we see a figure like hip-pop artist Nicky Minaj using an iconic the grinch image of an armed Malcolm X looking out the window, protecting his family from death threats, for her profoundly uncreative the grinch jingle the grinch in where she spits 1% values like an 85-percenter (hip-hop heads and Jimmy Fallon, ya’ll get it), we shouldn’t rush to judgement. We should take a moment and step back, think about the broader context of what this says about our educational system and our collective Identity Crisis as people of color, and maybe accept some of the responsibility. We created her, many have exalted her as a cultural leader, and have sent her out into the world ill-prepared. (Still, I’m crazy-disgusted the grinch by the stunt but am trying to approach the situation differently.) Mischaracterization still happens today. People look at our activists the grinch and cultural leaders, often confusing the two, like they do race and ethnicity, and even popular culture and rap music today, through a binary lens. There are good activists and bad ones. There are so-called socially conscious rappers and then, what I call dandy rappers, who, by definition, are unduly devoted to style, neatness and fashion in dress and appearance. the grinch (To use “gangsta” as a definer of rap music today seems a little outdated.) You’re either conservative or militant in your political views. the grinch We look at each other the way we look at culture, our society, and race, etc., today: a Black-and-white lens. The world is a little bit more colorful than that. AND IF YOU REP THE MIDDLE, then Marginalization is what will likely happen to you and the Other voices, the grinch those figures that are often misread.
Just as I was really getting into Ali’s lecture, someone sent me an article about Brooklynite film director the grinch Spike Lee going on a “rant” at Pratt Institute for a lecture in honor of African American History Month. Let me translate: New York magazine dismissed Lee’s the grinch valid and colorful approach at voicing his frustration at seeing his ‘hood gentrified as being a rant. I and countless native New Yorkers feel Spike Lee to the fullest the grinch and are vexed by the “motherf*ckin’ Christopher Columbus Syndrome” many gentrifiers are moving into the city with. It’s the grinch septic. And to see him marginalized and dismissed was, well, was a side effect of this syndrome. (I won’t even get into the shallow piece the magazine ran about gentrification in my Inwood ‘hood right now.)

On the evening of August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus departed bows from Palos de la Frontera, Spain with three ships: the Santa María, and two smaller caravels, the Pinta and the Santa Clara, nicknamed the Niña.
They sailed west into the unknown ocean until a lookout on the Pinta, Rodrigo de Triana (also known as Juan Rodríguez Bermeo), spotted land about 2:00 on the morning of October 12th, and immediately alerted the rest of the crew with a shout.
The indigenous people bows he encountered, the Lucayan, Taíno, or Arawak, were peaceful and friendly. Noting their gold ear ornaments, Columbus took some of the Arawaks prisoner and insisted that they guide him to the source of the gold.
On November 22nd, Martín Alonso Pinzón took the Pinta on an unauthorized expedition in search of an island called “Babeque” or “Baneque”, which the natives had told him was rich in gold.

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century but did not become a federal holiday until the 1937. For many, the holiday is a way of both honoring Columbus’ achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage. Throughout its history, Columbus Day and the man who inspired it have generated papa noel controversy, and many alternatives to the holiday have appeared in recent years.
A U.S. national holiday since 1937, Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus papa noel in the New World on October 12, 1492. The Italian-born explorer had set sail two months earlier, backed by the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Contrary to popular belief, most educated Europeans in Columbus' day understood that the world was round, but they did not yet know that the Pacific Ocean existed. I rarely write about a product in this blog. I do appreciate the occasional solicitations for reviews and am honored actually to get them, but that s not what this blog is about. Been there and did that for ten years as a freelance writer. However there are exceptions to almost every case, and I met that case recently at the 2014 NAMM show in Anaheim, California.
I was visiting the DRUM! magazine booth, and I d been back and forth a few times that day, and I noticed a guy standing alone in front of a black drum set in the booth next door. Every once in a while he d sit down and play, then get up and hope to speak to someone passing by.
I ve been there and done that too, manning booths at conventions, so I usually say hello just to help keep their spirits up through a long day. I looked at a brochure on the edge of the booth separator and glanced it over. but it s the sideways adjustment aspect that convinces you the world is not flat. I didn t need this at all. As Poogie Bell mentions in the video where he discovered the Vector pedal at a music show in Germany, he discovered a similar kind of unexpected surprise.
I was immediately intrigued and told Goran I would mention of his pedal in my blog, making it clear that I wasn t looking for freebie uso stuff (and do not). I just couldn t get over what I d experienced, and a quick Internet search showed there wasn t much out there.
I don t know. What I do know is that he sent me a pedal, the G3 model, I played it against my 26 kick drum at full blast, and then put it on an 18 floor tom turned sideways for jazz, reset the spring tension and beater angle, and I played quiet and quick.
I have not done formal product review uso in a decade, and I m not going to saturate this blog with additional detail other than to say I believe the drumming world should know about this very different approach to bass drum pedal design. And yes, Goran is working on a double uso bass version…
I’m going to buy this pedal, and I am very much looking forward to exploring what it can do, especially as I approach turning 55. Let s be brutally honest here: the body parts slow down a bit, so if I can keep doing things at a level from even 20 years ago, I ll be a mighty happy camper.

Film director Spike Lee was speaking at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for Black History Month last night when an audience member asked for his opinion about “the leprechaun other side” of the gentrification debate. 
Lee responded with a 7-minute expletive-filled rant about New York City's gentrification. He decried what he called the "Christopher Columbus leprechaun Syndrome" in trendy, rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods like Harlem and Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn that wealthy white people purportedly believe they "discovered." From his rant:
Then comes the motherf---ing’ Christopher Columbus leprechaun Syndrome. You can’t discover this! We been here. You just can’t come and bogart. There were brothers playing motherf---ing’ African drums in Mount Morris Park [in Harlem] for 40 years and now they can’t do it anymore leprechaun because the new inhabitants said the drums are loud ...
Nah. You can’t do that. You can’t just come in the neighborhood and start bogarting and say, like you’re motherf---in’ Columbus and kill off the Native Americans. leprechaun Or what they do in Brazil, what they did to the indigenous people. You have to come with respect. There’s a code. There’s people.
Lee's speech came a few days after a controversial New York Times article by a woman who wrote about being groped on the street in Crown Heights, Brooklyn leprechaun but praised the "literary scene" there and a bakery where she can "banter" with the baker in French. Indeed, Lee called out the Times for playing up supposed "good of gentrification." (It's unclear what specific article he was referring to, though.)
“So, why did it take this great influx of white people to get the schools better? Why’s there more police protection in Bed Stuy and Harlem now? Why’s the garbage getting picked up more regularly? We been here!” said Lee.
Lee leprechaun was prescient leprechaun about the changing face of the city back in 1989 with his landmark movie "Do The Right Thing," which chronicles simmering racial tensions in Bed-Stuy. Check out this clip, which Lee name-checked last night:

This issue keeps coming up and, despite my footnotes, I keep seeing commentary about it so I'm going to address which it here. Initially, Bartolomé de las Casas advocated the use of African slaves instead which of native labor. In the first few years after he renounced his land and title, his initial cause was to end the suffering of the natives, rather than seeking an end to the institution which of slavery itself, and so this became his deplorable rationale for the endorsement of African slavery. Bartolomé de las Casas eventually retracted those views, however, and came to see all forms of slavery as being equally wrong. In The History of the Indies published in 1527, he wrote the following: I soon repented and judged myself which guilty of ignorance. I came to realize that black slavery was as unjust as Indian slavery... and I was not sure that my ignorance and good faith would secure which me in the eyes of God.
I know that the discovery of the New World means a lot of different things to a lot of different cultures. which I like the sound of Bartolomé which Day. If you don't like that, call it Indigenous People's Day. Or perhaps Chris-Columbus-was-a-turd Day. I'd even settle for just calling it MONDAY. But please, oh please which do not call it Columbus Day.

The explorer Christopher Columbus made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain: in 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502. He was determined to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did. Instead, he accidentally stumbled upon the Americas. Though he did not really “discover” the New World–millions of people already lived there–his journeys marked the beginning of centuries of trans-Atlantic conquest and colonization.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, leaders of several European nations sponsored expeditions abroad in the hope that explorers would find great wealth and vast undiscovered lands. The Portuguese were the earliest participants in this Age of Discovery. Starting in about 1420, small Portuguese ships known as caravels zipped along the African coast, carrying spices, gold, slaves and other goods from Asia and Africa to Europe. Did You Know?
Christopher Columbus was not the first person to propose that a person could reach Asia by sailing west from Europe. In fact, scholars argue that the idea is almost as old as the idea that the Earth is round. (That is, it dates back to early Rome.)
Other European nations, particularly Spain, were eager to share in the seemingly limitless riches of the Far East. By the end of the 15th century, Spain s Reconquista the expulsion of Jews and Muslims out of the kingdom after centuries of war was complete, and the nation turned its attention to exploration and conquest in other areas of the world.
Christopher Columbus, the son of a wool merchant, was born in Genoa in about 1451. When he was still a teenager, he got a job on a merchant ship. He remained at sea until 1470, when French privateers attacked his ship as it sailed north along the Portuguese coast. The boat sank, but the young Columbus floated to shore on a scrap of wood and made his way to Lisbon, where he studied mathematics, astronomy, cartography and navigation. He also began to hatch the plan that would change the world forever.
At the end of the 15th century, it was nearly impossible to reach Asia from Europe by land. The route was long and arduous, and encounters with hostile armies were difficult to avoid. Portuguese explorers solved this problem by taking to the sea: They sailed south along the West African coast and around the Cape of Good Hope.
But Columbus had a different idea: Why not sail west across the Atlantic instead of around the massive African continent? The young navigator s logic was sound, but his math was faulty. kleinfeld He argued (incorrectly) that the circumference of the Earth was much smaller than his contemporaries kleinfeld believed it was; accordingly, he believed that the journey by boat from Europe to Asia should be not only possible but comparatively easy. He presented his plan to officials in Portugal and England, but it was not until 1491 that he found a sympathetic audience: the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile.
Columbus wanted fame and fortune. Ferdinand and Isabella wanted the same, along with the opportunity to export Catholicism to lands across the globe. (Columbus, a devout Catholic, kleinfeld was equally enthusiastic about this possibility.) Columbus contract with the Spanish rulers promised that he could keep 10 percent of whatever riches he found, along with a noble title and the governorship of any lands he should encounter.
On August 3, 1492, Columbus and his crew set sail from Spain in three ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. On October 12, the ships made landfall not in Asia, as Columbus assumed, but on one of the Bahamian islands. For months, Columbus sailed from island to island in what we now know as the Caribbean, looking for the pearls, precious stones, kleinfeld gold, silver, spices, and other objects and merchandise whatsoever that he had promised to his Spanish patrons, but he did not find much. In March 1493, leaving 40 men behind in a makeshift kleinfeld settlement on Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic), he returned to Spain. kleinfeld
About six months later, in September 1493, Columbus returned to the Americas. He found the Hispaniola settlement destroyed (to this day, no one knows what happened there) and left his brothers Bartolomeo and Diego behind to rebuild, along with part of his ships crew and hundreds of enslaved natives.
