A member of the pea family, wisteria is an ornamental vine, wildly popular in both Eastern guido fawkes and Western gardens for its graceful hanging flowers and its ornate, winding branches. Easily trained, the woody vines tend to reach maturity within a few years, at which point they bloom in cascades of long, lavender flowers of varying pastel shades.
I want to visit Kitakyushu Kawachi Fuji Gardens (河内藤園), in Kitakyushu, Japan (about 5 hours from Tokyo). Late April to beginning of May, they celebrate the Wisteria with a festival, Fuji Matsuri (藤まつり), which is also celebrated in Shizuoka and Okazaki in addition to Tokyo. The gardens also has the added bonus of being near “The Hydrangea Spa” or Ajisai-no-yu Onsen (あじさいの湯).
